Yorkshire Terriers

Breed Group: Toy

Weight: 4-8 lbs.

Height: Approx. 8-9”

Yorkshire Terriers made their entrance into the United States in 1872 and have been a favorite ever since. This little dog is a member of the Toy Breed group and is best known for its long flowing coat of hair. They are often called 'Yorkies'.

The Yorkies’ ears are pointed and stand erect, and its tail is typically docked. You can usually see their hair tied up on top of their head with a cute little bow, to keep their hair out of their eyes. Their coat is fine and silky, and they have no undercoat so they do not shed. Their coat is usually a dark steel blue color with shades of tan thrown in.

These cute little dogs are excellent lap dogs being small and quite content to sit and be held on its owner’s lap for long stretches of time. They are intelligent, fearless and extremely affectionate. It has been stated that Yorkshire Terriers require more human companionship and attention than most other dog breeds.

This breed of dog does not typically do well with small children, although they may be more tolerant of older children if they have been raised with them. In fact, small children can cause great harm to these delicate, fine-boned, little dogs. They do, however, get along well with other household pets.

Yorkies make an excellent watchdog that will announce strangers very vocally. They are very territorial.

These dogs do not need a lot of exercise and are suited to short walks. This makes them ideal for apartment living or homes with smaller yards. They are very active, energetic and excitable little dogs in their own environment.

Although Yorkies can be a great pet, a prospective owner must be aware of common characteristics they may have to deal with. The care of a Yorkshire Terrier comes mainly in the form of grooming. They need frequent brushing and combing for their long hair. Owners must also be aware of the fragility of this breed of dog, as they can sustain injuries very easily. They also need constant attention and supervision. When on a leash, their excitable nature may cause them to take off after anything that runs.

Yorkies can be a very rewarding pet for the right person, but an owner should consider carefully before committing to this sweet, delicate little dog.
