The Siamese breed of cat is believed to be descended from the ancient temple cats of Siam. They are the first breed to be distinctly recognized as being an Oriental cat. They are generally a long-lived cat, living approximately 15-20 years.
Siamese all have a cream colored base coat with darker colored points on their face, ears, paws, lower legs and tails. This pointed pattern can be considered a form of partial albinism resulting from a mutation in tyrosinase, an enzyme involved in the production of melanin. The points of a Siamese can be extremely dark or almost black in color, with some having blue (a cool grey), brown (a lighter shade of brown) or lilac (a pale warm grey) points.
Siamese kittens are born a pure cream or white color and develop their distinctive points a few months later, in the colder parts of their bodies. Siamese cats living in warmer climates typically have lighter coats than ones who live in cooler areas. After about four weeks of age, the points are visible and should distinguish which color they will become. The color of a Siamese cat tends to darken with age.
This cat breed has almond-shaped, blue eyes and short, flat fur. In earlier times many of these cats had crossed-eyes, but through selective breeding, this trait is gradually being bred out of them (although it still crops up now and then). These cats are often less active at night because their night vision is not as good as other cats.
They tend to have a muscular, long, lanky, sleek build and generally appear very graceful. This breed of cat is known for it’s intelligence and social behavior, although sometimes it can seem quite aloof. They are often described, however, as being ‘extroverts’. These cats are very inquisitive and playful.
This type of cat is generally a low-maintenance cat and needs very little grooming. With their sleek short fur, they tend to keep themselves well-groomed. They do not shed excessively, but it is still a good idea to give them the occasional brushing.
The Siamese breed of cat have a very unique voice and are quite vocal when they demand attention. They are a type of cat that does demand a lot of personal attention, and need to have human companionship. They often form a strong bond with a single person. They also make excellent family pets and are indulgent with small children
