Dog Breeds - Schnauzers
The are three types of Schnauzers—the Giant, the Standard and the Miniature.
Schnauzer (Standard)
Breed Group: Working
Weight: Approx. 33 lbs.
Height: Approx. 17 ½ -19 ½ “
This is one of those dog breeds that is intelligent, energetic and very sociable. They love to be around people and excel in the family atmosphere.
This dog has a harsh, wiry outer-coat, with a softer coat underneath. They are typically salt and pepper or black in color, and sometimes come in a black and silver bi-color combination. These dogs need a lot of grooming or their wiry coats will become matted. They are a robust dog characterized by a blunt, heavily whiskered muzzle. The tails of these dogs are usually docked.
These dogs fall into the working dog category. The Standard are a medium sized dog which are relatively a healthy breed. They live on average for about 12-15 years.
The Standard size is reputed to be the stock from which the Giant and Miniature versions are derived from. They were originally dubbed as guard dogs and ratters due to their intelligence and courage. They have also been used often as dispatch carrier dogs, Red Cross dogs or police dogs, thereby gaining them the status into the working dog category.
These dogs are typically very good watch dogs which will warn of strangers loudly. This is one of the dog breeds that are very aware of their surroundings or change in environment, and they will announce this to you with a loud bark. They are more likely to ‘hold’ intruders rather than attacking them, and have been known corner them for quite a period of time.
Since these dogs are medium-large, it is recommended that they be restrained in a fenced yard. Be aware though, that if motivated, these dogs are able to jump a 6’ high fence. They are a very energetic type of dog that does require a lot of exercise.
These dogs as family pets, are good with children and they typically appoint themselves as their family’s guardian and protector. This type of dog loves people and makes a great companion.
If you are considering this breed of dog as a pet, you should be prepared to have the time to spend with this sociable dog, as they need lots of love and attention.
Schnauzer (Miniature)
Breed Group: Non-Sporting
Weight: 13 – 15 lbs.
Height: Approx. 13 – 14 “
The Miniature Schnauzer looks a great deal like the Standard version described above, with a harsh, wiry coat that is salt and pepper, or black, in color. They can also come in a black and silver color mix. Of course, being miniature, they are smaller in size which makes them an ideal candidate for apartment living or a home with a smaller yard.
Like the Standard, they also make excellent family pets who are devoted to their home and family. They seldom wander, and are energetic, perky, loving companions. These friendly little dogs still however, warn of strangers, but will allow accepted strangers into the house. They are obedient, loyal little dogs that make excellent companions.
Schnauzers as a whole tend to shed very little. They also tend to cause less severe reactions in people who are allergic to dogs. These dogs however, should be groomed every 5-8 weeks, and this is usually done by a professional. They should also receive a general brushing at least once weekly, and be bathed as often as weekly as well.
Being quite an energetic dog, this smaller version still requires a lot of exercise. Because they are also quite intelligent, they need mental stimulation to keep their minds busy.
Schnauzer (Giant)
Breed Group: Working
Weight: Approx. 70-99 lbs.
Height: Approx. 23 ½ -27 ½ “
The Giant Schnauzer is a larger more powerful version of the Standard. This dog was bred to do all the same things the Standard was bred for, like herding, ratting, guarding, etc., but also to do things like pulling carts and extensive police work. This makes them a very versatile dog. They have many of the same characteristics of the Standard described above, including over-all looks and temperament.
Since this dog breed is a very large energetic dog, they require a large yard and a great deal of exercise, which the pet owner should be prepared to provide.
Schnauzers are dependable, sturdy dogs that make excellent family pets. Since the temperament of these dogs is terrific for a family environment, you would be wise as a pet owner to choose the size that is right for your family.
