Why look at Dog Breeds?

There are so many different dog breeds out there, and they each have their strengths and weaknesses. It is often difficult to sort them all out and decide which breed is right for you, or even if your own dog is typical of his breed.

The following section lists different dog breeds and tells a little bit of the characteristics common to each. Hopefully this section will help you as an up-coming pet owner to decide on the particular type of dog that you may wish to have. Or, if you are already a dog owner, maybe this section will help you identify and associate your dog’s behavior with what is typical of that particular breed.

For example, you may be looking to get a cute little Yorkshire Terrier as a family pet. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have a small, little puppy for your kids to cuddle and play with?

Have you considered that this type of dog needs constant grooming of their long, silky coat of hair? Yorkshire Terriers are also not really suited to families with very young children because they are very fragile and can be harmed quite easily.

This section may help you to see that another, sturdier type of dog may be better suited to your family life.

In another instance, perhaps you already have a Miniature Schnauzer and may wonder why he is moody sometimes. Is he typically sad and depressed looking, looking at you from his sleeping pillow with his doleful eyes?

This section may help you to realize that a Schnauzer’s temperament is well suited to a family atmosphere but that they need a lot of attention and affection from their pet owners to be mentally healthy.

When you investigate this section you will find the typical height and weight characteristic of each dog breed, as well as a little information about their typical personalities and even some of the concerns of that particular breed of dog.

No, in answer to the question, one breed of dog is not better than another. It may well be, though, that one type of dog may suit you and your family better. You may like the look of one type of dog better than another, or you may find a certain dog breed has the temperment you are looking for. The choice you make should be suited to your wants and needs in a pet.

The choice of the type of dog you may be looking at is vast, but a little research now will make you a GREAT pet owner later. It may even help you as a present dog owner to enhance your understanding of your pet, and enable you to contribute to his needs better now.
