Included in dog breeds that are very popular with many pet owners is the Jack Russell Terrier (or Parson Jack Russell Terrier). This is a sturdy little dog who is known for his ability at hunting small animals, like foxes or raccoons. He is a fearless, energetic dog with a lively, happy disposition.
A Jack Russell Terrier is one of the working type of dog breeds that has a broad genetic make-up. As such, they are not entirely purebred and sometimes do not breed to type. These dogs also have different coat types: smooth coated, broken and rough (coarse, with longer straight hair). Note that all coat types do shed, and the smooth coats typically shed the most.
This breed of dog is a sturdy looking, muscular dog with small “v” shaped ears that drop forward. They are predominately white with tan, black or brown markings. They have shorter legs but are balanced and proportionate in appearance. Their tails are usually cropped .
If you are considering owning a Jack Russell Terrier, you must be prepared to deal with this little bundle of energy. These dogs are athletic and energetic, and require vigorous exercise frequently. Also be advised that they have strong chasing instincts (from their hunter origins) and should not be trusted off the leash. They can be quite stubborn, although they really are intelligent little things. They generally like to dig holes (again from their hunting background) and tend to bark. They require regular brushing (the smooth coated ones) and trimming (the ones with the wiry coats.)
Jack Russells are a dog that will require a lot of activity and exercise. They like to be the center of attention, and if they are bored they will ‘create’ an activity for themselves—usually involving some mischief.
You may have to be careful of the occasional ‘nip’ if you over-correct these little guys. This characteristic comes from their hunting background where they had to be aggressive and fierce with the animals they hunted. Although they learn well and are quick to train, you need to show them who is boss.
Sometimes these dogs are considered undesirable to have with small children, as they may not tolerate any abuse from a small life form that they may think of as prey. But they can also be surprisingly kind and gentle with well-behaved children. You will also need to be careful of your Jack Russell Terrier and other pets in the house (cats, bird, hamsters, gerbils, etc.) because, again, of their strong hunting instincts.
On the good side to this type of dog, they are really a convenient size of dog and are sturdy enough that you do not have to be overly careful when handling them. They make extremely good watch-dogs, and are very defensive of their families, including children. They are lovable, funny, extremely loyal, and as a pet owner you will not be bored with their antics.
Pet owners who investigate the Jack Russell Terrier as one of the dog breeds they consider will not be disappointed in this little dog's loving nature as long as they remember what a ball of energy this dog can be.
