Cat Breeds - American Shorthair

Breed: American Shorthair

Size: Medium-Large

Weight: 8-12 lbs.

Of all the cat breeds, this one is considered one of the most popular in the United States today. Originally it was called the Domestic Shorthair, but the name was changed to American Shorthair by the Cat Fancier's Association (CFA) in 1965. It was thought to have originated from the cats brought over from the Mayflower, where it was undoubtedly the ship’s ‘mouser’. Today these cats probably do not distain even to try to catch a mouse, but are more of a house or lap cat.

As the name suggests, these animals typically have a short-haired soft coat that comes in a rainbow of colors, the most common being the silver classic silver tabby and the classic brown tabby. These cats have eyes that are large, wide-set and almond-shaped. Most of the colored varieties of this breed can have a brilliant gold eye color, with the exception of the silver tabby who has a brilliant green eye color. Solid white varieties of the American Shorthair can have gold, blue or even an odd eye color (blue and gold).

The American Shorthair is one of those cat breeds that are typically quite independent. They generally do not like to be extensively carried around by their owners. They like to move around under their own steam. These cats, however, can be quite sociable when brought up in the family atmosphere. They tend to get along well with dogs and children.

This is also a hardy cat known for its longevity. They are typically quite healthy and robust, as well as very attractive. They also display a quiet, loving nature. You would not go wrong in choosing this breed of cat for a family pet.
