Becoming a Pet Owner
There are many things you have to think about before you consider becoming a pet owner. Even when you love animals and know you want to share your life with them, becoming a pet owner may mean a lot more responsibility for you that you may not have considered. There is a high degree of commitment that goes along with owning a pet.
Being an animal lover is one of the reasons that you need to consider carefully before you take on the responsibility of pet ownership. If you love animals you will want them to be happy. Your pet will be with you for a long time (hopefully) and you need to be sure that you take this into account.
Before making the final decision towards becoming a pet owner, you should assess your and your family’s situation. You need to judge whether this is the right time for you to dive into pet ownership. Will you be able to spend the time required that your pet will need? Pets require attention, such as feeding, grooming, exercise, and even just spending time with them. You need to be sure that you have enough time to take care of their needs.
You also should look at your environment. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you can’t have a pet because you live in an apartment with no backyard. It simply may mean that you need to get the right kind of pet for your environment. For example, you may decide to get a cat instead of a dog because cats can be litter-box trained. Or you may even wish to get a Yorkshire Terrier that may be more suited to a smaller environment, instead of a Rottweiller. You may even opt for a bird friend that can be confined to a cage, instead of another type of animal that needs room to roam.
When you are considering pet ownership, you also should take a look at the financial aspect of it. You need to be aware that there are expenses involved in pet ownership. Your pet not only needs food, but you will have certain veterinarian bills as well. There are also other sundry items that you may need, such as cat litter, bird toys, kennel fees if you are away, etc.
When deciding on pet ownership, you should also consider if this is the right time for you to get a pet. Again, you may love animals but you do want your pet to be happy and healthy. If you are in a state of transition in your life, this may not be the right time to get a pet. Pets need to adjust to their environment to be mentally healthy, so if you are moving it may be wise to hold off on getting a pet. Another reason for ‘timing’ pet ownership may be that you are having a baby. The baby may take up more time commitment than you think, and you may not have the time you need to devote to your pet.
Having a pet is a big decision, one that will affect yours and your pet’s life in many ways. You need to consider carefully before taking on the responsibility of pet ownership. But, having a pet has many rewards. There is nothing like having that loving relationship that can exist between you and your pet.
